Monochromatic Motivation

Happy Friday, lovelies! I hope you’ve had a great week of WFH or essential-personnel  life (BTW, y’all are amazing!). My first week of WFH has been rough. Oops? Too honest? It was. I feel like I have a totally new job and if you know how that feels, you know what I mean. Anywho, the lack of dress code in my day-to-day life has led me to be a little more creative with my outfits. Enter: my monochromatic motivation. AlyandtheValley_PinkMonochromaticOutfit298AlyandtheValley_PinkMonochromaticOutfit450Truth be told, my sister-in-law asked for this outfit. Initially, I thought, well I don’t have any exciting pants, so I can’t do that. The truth is, I don’t. I DO have a lot of exciting skirts though! Do you remember this scalloped skirt from this post at the end of summer? Well, it has come out of retirement. I bought this pink sweater for myself for Valentine’s Day and have wanted to wear it as many times as possible before it gets hot (Life update: It’s hot). When a mild cold front blew through, I took a chance and threw on my sweater and fell in love. This trend scared me a little bit, so I thought I’d help you out with some guidelines for making this look WERK for you. The great thing is that a lot of these outfits can be made with things you own.

  • The colors should be the same (obvi, pink with pink & green with green), but very different shades. I have bubble gum pink and hot pink going on. Both of these are popular shades, but are very different once you put them together.
  •  Matchy, Matchy? This contradicts the tip above, but I do think it’s okay. Just be sure to break the outfit up with a pop of another fun color (I love pinks with yellows and turquoise) and/or a print (leopard, duh!) Think of a pant suit in a fun color. YUM.
  • Work a denim jacket if you’re going for a look that is monochromatic from head to toe (aka includes shoes). The denim provides a neutral and also gives you a way to slowly ease your way into the trend. No shame, if you’re not 100% confident the first time you rock this trend. I’ve been there, but if you’re gonna hide behind a jacket, you may as well make it cute, right?
  • Let your outfit do the talking. Hair and accessories should be kept to a minimum. I slicked back my hair and wore my diamond studs to keep it simple and classy. I do think  hair accessories are the exception to this rule though. (Please, wear cutie clips for me- my hair is just way too thick for that -_-).
  • Have fun! The best thing about a trend is that you get to do it your own way. Think about it- we’re wearing crop tops, mom jeans, and dad shoes again…who could’ve predicted that? Do what you want, gf!

AlyandtheValley_PinkMonochromaticOutfit322AlyandtheValley_PinkMonochromaticOutfit399I consider myself to have very classic taste when it comes to clothing, so when I incorporate a trend it’s always a little new wracking for me. I hope that this post gives you a little courage to try a new trend (even though it may only be to wear to your living room)! Have a great weekend, friends!
