As I write this intro, I am sitting in a room full of women preparing for a hot barre class. I haven’t been to a hot-anything class in weeks. I haven’t broken a sweat (on purpose) in days. Today, I decided that I was going to restart again. I made a goal of running a 5k at the beginning of this year. In case you haven’t guessed, I haven’t done it. I can’t say that I’m sad about it though. My goal of running a 5k was a comparison of myself to others. I felt like that was a good measurement of physical fitness, but I’ve come to realize that maybe it wasn’t the right measurement for me.
I’ve been struggling to wake up early for my workout routine. I’m an early bird that has trouble getting to bed on time, go figure. I have been feeling so sluggish lately and I know that has everything to do with the fact that I haven´t been active. However, I struggle so much with self guilt that if I do not stick to my ¨workout plan¨that I created for myself, I immediately shut down and start to give up. For example, I wanted to wake up at 5 and work out at my local gym from 5:30-6:30 (I live for a time frame and limits and starting and ending points!), but I snoozed until 5:30 and slipped back to sleep because “it was too late.” But, that’s not true. I could’ve gotten up, changed into the clothes I HAD ALREADY SET OUT and gotten to the gym AT LEAST by 6:00 and done a short little workout on the machines or free weights or even walk/run on the treadmill. A 30-minute cardio routine is impressive for someone who isn’t a “runner,” and I DEFINITELY fall into that category!

The spring is a crazy time for us school-based SLPs. Lots of testing and meetings and just a lot (Don’t feel bad for me, I see the light!). My plan for the day was to sign up for my barre class during my lunch time and head out as soon as the clock hit 5! I even packed my cutie Lululemon Bag! As I walked out of my office, my heart sank because I totally forgot to sign up for my class during lunch because I cut it short to pick up some materials at a different campus. I started to, again, tell myself it was too late to try. But, that wasn’t true! I have been wanting to work out all week and I was going to let a silly mistake stop me again. I am so glad I didn’t! I felt so inspired to write this blog after my workout class because I was SO giddy after. My workout killed me. I was dead and shaking but I was grinning from ear to ear. It was a great reminder of why it’s important to just get ourselves out there and do the most we can to make ourselves happy!
For the past few weeks, I have been my own worst enemy. Which leads me to feel even more deeply about dropping a goal that compares me to others. If I become interested in running while committing my time to exercise methods that actually motivate me (like barre, yoga, group fitness classes, and short jogs before some weights), then maybe it’ll happen for me. A runner is just not who I’m meant to be, right now. If I’m tired then I need to sleep, and I should pack a bag for the gym or sign up for an afternoon class. If I want to make my health and fitness a priority, I need to do it at home and in the studio/gym.
As a little extra, I am going to share with y’all a list of my favorite workout spots in the RGV, thus far. I am always looking for great spots to workout! My husband always laughs at me when I tell him I want to get ANOTHER membership! What can I say? I like to change it up! Here are my current favorites (in no particular order):
1. Crunch Gym in Pharr- (My current home gym, that I’m struggling to make it to, oops!) It’s very new and has A TON of great classes! There is also a water massage bed, which I have gotten once and loved!
2. Orange Theory in McAllen– If you haven’t tried, go for it! Don’t be scared! There is a waitlist to get into the classes, so plan ahead (but, I mean what does that say???).
3. The Hot Studio in North McAllen and Mission: This is where I did Hot Barre. They also have all types of yoga, Pilates, core, and sculpting classes. All hot, all the time!
4. Ride 956 in McAllen– I have only been here once, but if you’re interested in a dedicated cycling studio, this one was pretty great! They’re also bilingual!
5. Studio A Pilates Barre– This was the first place I took Barre in the RGV! I haven’t been to the new location (I believe it’s in the same plaza), but this class was a lot of fun. Definitely look into if you’re not too keen on the “hot” classes.
6. Mind & Core Pilates in McAllen- So much YES! If you have never tried reformer Pilates, go give this spot a shot! Paola is fantastic and I felt like my spine was really elongated after every class!
These are definitely not all the studios/gyms in the Valley, but these are the few I’ve tried and loved. I am always wanting to try new things, so if there’s a studio you want to introduce me to, PLEASE do! We’re headed to Cancun in June (Surprise!), so I’ll need all the exercise I can get!! I hope y’all enjoyed and received something from this post. It was one of those moments where things just “clicked” for me. I hope it does for you! If you have any questions about the studios or anything at all, please send me a DM or a comment! I love hearing what y’all have to stay! Thanks for reading, friends!
You look great girl! Same, love trying new fitness programs or classes, really changes things up
It really does! I can’t wait until my next class!
These are all great recommendations! And I feel like mixing it up is really key to keeping me interested in working out
Glad I’m not alone!

Thank you so much! I’m waiting for them to open up an orange theory closer to home so I can try the 5 AM classes!
